Project:         Samuel Johnson Community Hospital

Client:            Burntwood, Lichfield & Tamworth PCT

Value:            £12m

This is our second community hospital for the same Trust, Sir Robert Peel Hospital at Tamworth was completed in 1998, both have floor areas of 6000m².  The Lichfield scheme includes the following departments: Outpatients, Minor Injuries, Radiology, Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy and two wards predominantly for the elderly.  Social Services, Age Concern and other Community Services are integral parts of the development.  The new building provides ensuite, single sex ward accommodation. Space standards are good and there is a strong emphasis on natural light and ventilation.

Ansell & Bailey were involved from the initial feasibility stage and were commissioned by the PCT to develop the scheme to planning stage before being novated to the P21 partner, Laing O’ Rourke.

We were also responsible for whole site planning including a group of listed buildings and areas of land separated for residential development. Planning permission for residential use was obtained for two other redundant sites. Services were combined at the Samuel Johnson Community Hospital from the three trust sites in Lichfield and opened in January 2007.
