Project:         Leukaemia Unit

Client:            Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust

Value:            £7m

The Hammersmith Hospital Leukaemia Unit is internationally renowned for the treatment of Leukaemia and associated research.

In 1998 a Business Case was approved for the building of a new centralised Leukaemia Unit on a site adjacent to the Oncology Building at Hammersmith Hospital.

The design team worked closely with the Trust’s project officers and the Leukaemia medical teams to produce a building that centralises out-patients, in-patients and research facilities, previously scattered around the Hammersmith Hospital site.

The challenge for the design team was to create a modern facility, which was not only practical and met the latest clinical standards, but also offers patients an attractive environment in which to be treated.

The four storey building includes a 14 room ward with en-suite bathrooms for patients, a modern system of air-filtration to reduce the risk of infection and a day-care area where out-patients can be treated in comfort and privacy.
